The first comprehensive Constantin Brâncuși exhibition in Germany in over 50 years: more than 150 works, plus a partial reconstruction of his Paris studio shown outside France for the first time since 1957. Closes 9 August.

What it is

The Neue Nationalgalerie is showing the first comprehensive exhibition of Constantin Brâncuși in Germany in more than fifty years, mounted together with the Centre Pompidou in Paris. More than 150 sculptures, photographs, drawings, films and archival materials trace how a sculptor born in Hobița, Romania, reduced form until modern sculpture had to be rethought around him.

The works on show include The Kiss, Bird in Space, Sleeping Muse and Endless Column.

Why this one matters

The centrepiece is a partial reconstruction of Brâncuși's Paris studio — the arrangement he treated as a single work in itself, and which he left to the French state on condition it be preserved as he had set it. It normally sits at the Centre Pompidou. This is the first time it has been shown outside France since 1957.

The exhibition is held under the joint patronage of the presidents of Germany, France and Romania.
